At Re. we set out with a clear goal: to create the best running sunglasses on the market. And we didn’t just want sunglasses for the elite. We wanted to design sunglasses for every runner, no matter where they are on their journey. Drawing on our background in product and software development, we applied the same iterative approach we’ve used to build world-class products to the design of our sunglasses.

The result? A pair of sunglasses that balance performance, comfort, and style—designed by runners, for runners.

Our process

HOW RE. WAS BORN

STEP 1

Finding the need

We started running, just like many of you. As we progressed, we bought new gear specifically for running. The difference it made was significant. We can still remember thinking twice about spending $250 on a pair of runners when our normal trainers were doing the job just fine.

Nevertheless, that first run in those new runners justified the decision instantly. The more we ran the more we expanded our kit. It was only a matter of time before we realised we needed to start protecting our eyes from the Australian sun. Up until now we would run without sunglasses since all our existing pairs would just bounce all over the place.

Finding the right pair proved much more difficult than everything else in the running gear market. There was always a problem, too tight, fogs up, bounces too much, doesnt sit on the face well, etc. We realised there was only one major sunglasses brand truly catering to runners and doing a good job, and that didn’t sit right with us. This brand was the only one that felt good on a run, but it was wildy expensive and marketed to elite athletes, which we definitely were not.

The idea behind Re. was simple: running sunglasses should be as inclusive and accessible as the sport itself.

STEP 2

Building the dream team

Creating the perfect pair of sunglasses wasn’t something we could do alone. That’s why we teamed up with a group of experienced sunglasses designers who have worked with some of the biggest names in eyewear.

Together, we began brainstorming the perfect combination of lenses, frames, and materials that would best suit runners.

Step 3

Applying a product development approach

We know product development inside out. So, we applied the same methodology we use in software: test, learn, and iterate. With every prototype, we made adjustments—sometimes small tweaks, sometimes major overhauls—to move closer to the perfect design.

STEP 4

Testing, failing and refining

Our design process wasn’t smooth. We failed a lot before we got it right. Every failure taught us something new. We tested these prototypes ourselves, running in a variety of environments, distances, and weather conditions.

But that wasn’t enough. We also handed the glasses out to different communities of runners—from marathoners to casual joggers—to gather valuable feedback and insights.

Step 5

Never sacrificing quality

We went into this journey hoping we could build a product that could sell for under $100. But as we dove deeper into selecting the best materials for both lenses and frames, we quickly realised that the quality we were striving for demanded more. We didn’t compromise. While we couldn't meet our initial price goal, we are still proud to offer some of the highest-quality sunglasses on the market at a price far lower than other premium brands.

But that wasn’t enough. We also handed the glasses out to different communities of runners—from marathoners to casual joggers—to gather valuable feedback and insights.

STEP 6

Designing for performance

When it came to performance, we didn’t just focus on aesthetics. We zeroed in on issues unique to runners—like preventing fog, maximising ventilation, UV400 protection, and creating a lightweight frame that wouldn’t slip or bounce. We meticulously chose materials for comfort, fit, and adjustability to ensure our sunglasses felt perfect on your nose and stayed secure on every run.

Step 7

Building for every runner

We didn’t want a brand for just the top-tier athletes. We wanted Re. to be the brand for everyone—whether you're training for your first 5k or your tenth marathon. Our testing process and design adjustments reflected this philosophy.

We listened to runners from all walks of life to build sunglasses that feel just as good on a beginner’s face as they do on an elite athlete’s.
