Runners at an Australian run club

Best Run Clubs in Sydney and NSW

City2Surf is the biggest fun run in the world. The Sydney Marathon is now one of the world's Major Marathons. The clubs below are where people train for both, and they range from a 10,685-member Friday-morning gathering under the Harbour Bridge to free monthly groups in Newcastle, Tamworth and Narooma.

NSW alone has 257 run clubs listed on RunHub. This guide covers the ones worth knowing, organised by what they offer: big social turnouts, coastal routes, structured track sessions, creative collectives, and regional NSW options.

Our Choice (we are biased)

Rose Bay Run Club

Rose Bay Run Club is our favourite community run club, bringing together Eastern Suburbs runners for evening social runs along the harbour foreshore. Made for the everyday runner who doesnt wake up at 5am and is there for the journey not the pace. We are biased however as the club was co-founded by Tim, founder of Re., who started it to build a genuine local running community with his 2 mates.

It really is made for any pace and has the option for a 2.5km or 5km route. Sessions are social and welcoming to all paces. Everyone welcome to hang out at a reserved space at Club Rose Bay after. The social side is what makes this feel really special.

  • When: Wednesdays 6:30PM
  • Where: Rose Bay Basketball Courts, Eastern Suburbs
  • Cost: Free

The Big Social Clubs

Unofficial Run Club has 10,685+ members. Midnight Runners pairs weekly runs with bootcamps, track sessions, and costume party runs with afterparties. Sydney Run Club draws big numbers to Bondi each week. These three draw the largest regular crowds in Sydney.

Unofficial Run Club

What began as a handful of mates who could not get over the Harbour Bridge without stopping has grown into a 10,685-person movement. The 6.5km route heads to Circular Quay and back. Some run fast, others walk. Nobody gets left behind.

  • When: Fridays, 5.45am
  • Where: Burton Street, Kirribilli (under the Harbour Bridge, North Side)
  • Cost: Free

A 5.45am winter start means you begin in the dark and finish in early light. Re.'s photochromic running sunglasses darken and lighten with changing conditions, which suits the dark-to-dawn transition on this route.

Midnight Runners

Midnight Runners hosts weekly runs plus a rotating schedule of bootcamps, track sessions, long runs, and costume party runs with afterparties. They run across multiple cities. The Sydney chapter meets at King Street Wharf.

  • When: Wednesdays, 6.15pm
  • Where: The Sporting Globe, King Street Wharf
  • Cost: Free

Sydney Run Club

One of Sydney's most popular social running groups, Sydney Run Club meets weekly in Bondi with a consistent, large turnout. The Bondi location makes it a natural fit for the Eastern Suburbs running crowd, and the community keeps people coming back week after week. All paces welcome.

  • When: Check social media for current schedule
  • Where: Bondi
  • Cost: Free

Coastal Run Clubs

Three clubs run the Bronte-Bondi coastal stretch, and all meet before 6.30am on east-facing routes. Direct sun off the water is a given. Polarized lenses help here. Re.'s guide to polarized running sunglasses covers when they make a difference.

Coogee Run Club

More than 2,000 members. Four guided sessions every week, plus additional marathon training runs.

  • Tuesdays: 6.30pm, 5km
  • Wednesdays: 6.30am, speed session
  • Thursdays: 6.15am, 5km
  • Sundays: 8am, 10km
  • Where: Coogee Beach
  • Cost: Free

Bondi Beach Run Club

Runs the stretch of coastline between Bronte and Bondi. Coffee after.

  • When: Mondays and Wednesdays, 6.15am
  • Where: Bondi Surf Bathers' Life Saving Club
  • Cost: Free

Coastal Run Co

  • Cost: Free

The TCS Sydney Marathon's run club program partners with 20 clubs across Australia, including three regional NSW crews:

  • Never Run Club (Newcastle)
  • Social Trak Club (Tamworth)
  • Deadly Runners (Narooma)

All three are free, with monthly events from May to August for runners training toward the September marathon or looking for a local group.

How to Find the Right Club

New to running: Pace Yourself Run Club or Parkrun. No pace expectations, just show up.

Structured training: Kings Cross Track Club ($6 track nights at ES Marks) or Woodstock Runners (coached intervals, members aged 15 to 83, running since 1980).

Big social scene: Unofficial Run Club (10,685+ members), Midnight Runners (party runs and afterparties), Sydney Run Club, or Furies (4,000 members, magazine launches alongside track meets).

Coastal routes: Coogee Run Club (four weekly sessions), Bondi Beach Run Club, or Coastal Run Co for the Bronte-Bondi stretch.

Community and local: Rose Bay Run Club for harbourside running in the Eastern Suburbs. Meadowbank Run Club for the Ryde and Parramatta River area. Eastern Suburbs Run Club for a broader Eastern Suburbs crew.

Outside Sydney: The TCS Sydney Marathon partner clubs run free monthly events from May to August across 20 locations including Campbelltown Joggers Club, Paddo Panthers, Sydney Muslim Run Club, Sydney Striders, and more. The RunHub directory covers the rest of NSW.

Most clubs on this list are free. Woodstock Runners ($105/year) and KXTC's Thursday track night ($6/session) are the main exceptions. Every other club charges nothing.

FAQ

Is the Sydney Run Club free?

Most Sydney run clubs are free, including Unofficial Run Club, Coogee Run Club, Kings Cross Track Club (social runs), Midnight Runners, Bondi Beach Run Club, Rose Bay Run Club, and the TCS Sydney Marathon partner clubs. Kings Cross Track Club charges $6 for Thursday track sessions. Woodstock Runners has an annual membership of $105, though visitors can attend a couple of sessions for free.

What are the best running clubs in Sydney for beginners?

Pace Yourself Run Club (Centennial Park, Saturdays) and Parkrun are the most beginner-friendly, with no pace requirements. Unofficial Run Club welcomes walkers and new runners. Coogee Run Club's 2,000+ members means you will find someone at your pace regardless of fitness level.

Where to go running in Sydney?

The Bronte-to-Bondi coastal path is the most popular route among Sydney's run clubs, used by Bondi Beach Run Club, Coastal Run Co and 440 Run Club. The Harbour Bridge loop (Unofficial Run Club's 6.5km route from Kirribilli to Circular Quay) is another standout. Centennial Park offers a flat, car-free loop popular with Pace Yourself Run Club. The Rose Bay foreshore and Nielsen Park are worth exploring too. For track running, ES Marks Track hosts Kings Cross Track Club's Thursday sessions.

About the author

Tim Golubev

Founder, Re. (Re Your Run)

Tim built Re. after years of running in sunglasses that bounced, fogged, and ended up on his forehead. After discovering the UV damage that builds up without eye protection (even on cloudy days) and hearing the same frustrations from hundreds of other runners, he decided it was a problem worth fixing properly. With a background in Product across multiple industries, he approached it like any product problem: figure out what's broken, then build something that actually fixes it. He runs daily, co-founded Rose Bay Run Club, and Re. is his attempt to make one less thing that gets in the way of a good run.
