Heat Training Is Booming. Here's What It Means for Your Eyes.

Research presented at the 2026 American Physiology Summit confirmed what performance coaches have quietly known for a while: heat training works. Athletes who spend two to three weeks running in hot conditions show measurable improvements in how their bodies manage effort at race pace. Some studies point to performance gains of up to 8% in VO2 max under heat conditions, with meaningful carry-over to cooler racing environments.

It is not a niche protocol anymore. Runners are now doing midday sessions on purpose, adding layers in summer, or deliberately choosing the hottest part of the day to build their capacity for race-day conditions. What started as something elite teams did before destination marathons has filtered into everyday training culture. Most weeks, someone in a run club somewhere is asking about it.

That is a good thing. Heat adaptation is real, the science is solid, and more runners building their aerobic base in challenging conditions is not a bad outcome for the sport. But there is a side effect that does not always make it into the conversation: more deliberate time in direct sun means more UV exposure. And for most runners, the eyes are the last thing considered when thinking through training adaptations.

The UV problem with midday running

Most runners who think about UV protection think about sunscreen. That is reasonable, but UV400 eye protection matters just as much, and the risk profile changes significantly when you shift your training window from 6am to noon.

UV radiation peaks between 10am and 3pm in Australia, roughly the same window where heat adaptation benefits are highest. When you are running in that window, even on overcast days, you are absorbing significantly more UV than you would at dawn. The Australian sun is not forgiving here. Cumulative UV exposure over years of running is linked to conditions like cataracts, macular degeneration, and photokeratitis, which is essentially sunburn for the surface of your eye. It is real, it is progressive, and it does not announce itself until the damage is done.

The habit most runners fall into is wearing sunglasses for bright morning runs and skipping them for afternoon sessions because the routine never got updated. If your training schedule is now deliberately including hotter, sunnier sessions, your eye protection needs to keep up with it.

What heat sessions actually look like on the road

Heat training is not just about suffering in the sun. The typical protocol involves doing your base or easy mileage in elevated temperatures, keeping intensity lower than usual, and giving your body two to four weeks to adapt its thermoregulatory response. The adaptation happens gradually, and the benefits are cumulative.

In practice this often means late morning or early afternoon runs, sessions on exposed routes with limited shade, and longer time on feet in conditions where the road surface is radiating heat back at you. Road glare is significant at midday. Water, glass buildings, reflective road markings, and the road surface itself all bounce light back toward your face. It is exactly the kind of environment where a good lens earns its place in your kit.

The runners who feel the difference most sharply are those who previously only ran at dawn and suddenly find themselves squinting through a midday tempo in full sun. The conditions are genuinely different, and a lens that manages glare and cuts UV properly is not a luxury in that context.

Sweat rate and the fogging problem

The other thing that changes with heat sessions is sweat rate. Your body works harder to cool itself, meaning you are sweating more, earlier, and more consistently throughout the run. For sunglasses, this creates two real problems.

First, sweat running from your forehead and getting behind the lens creates the fogging problem that most runners will recognise from tempo runs in warm weather. If glare is the main issue
