If you spend any time on Strava or in a serious run club right now, you have probably noticed something. More runners, not just elites, are doing two runs a day. Easy 5k before work. Tempo or session work after. Or the inverse, a hard interval session at midday and a slow shake-out at dusk. The training method is called doubles, or two-a-days, and in 2026 it has stopped being an elite-only thing.
The half marathon and marathon participation surge is the main driver. Half marathon finishers grew over 20% last year. Marathon majors are oversubscribed. Recreational runners chasing PBs are reaching for the kind of mileage that used to be reserved for serious club athletes, and the only sensible way to get there without trashing your long runs is to split your weekly volume across two sessions a day.
This is a real shift in how everyday runners train. And it has a small, often-ignored consequence. If you are running twice in the same day, you are running in two completely different light conditions. That is worth thinking about, because what works for one run almost certainly does not work for the other.
What doubles actually look like
Most recreational doubles work follows a pattern. The first run is short and easy, usually 5 to 10 kilometres. The second is the main session. The big rule is keep at least one of the runs genuinely easy, so you are not stacking two hard efforts on the same day.
The split usually looks like one of these:
The before-work easy run plus the after-work session. You are out the door at 5:30am or 6am for an aerobic shakeout, then back out at 5pm or 6pm for tempo, intervals or a longer easy run.
The midday session plus the evening shake-out. Less common, but a few coaches favour it for marathoners who want their hardest work done early in the day. The first run is the main session, the second is a 20 to 30 minute very easy jog before dinner.
Either way, the runs sit at completely different ends of the day. Which means they sit in completely different light.
Why two runs means two very different lights
Most people forget how dramatically light shifts across a training day, especially at this time of year. In Sydney in early May, the sun rises around 6:30am and sets just before 5pm. A 5:30am easy run starts in proper darkness, transitions through civil twilight, and finishes in low golden light. An evening session that starts at 5:15pm runs through the last 30 minutes of daylight straight into dusk.
Then take the same week in late January. Sun is up at 5:45am, sets after 8pm. The morning easy run is bathed in low golden light from the start. The evening session at 6pm is in full direct summer sun.
The point is, depending on the season and the time of your runs, you can be dealing with anything from near-total darkness, to side-on dawn glare, to overhead summer sun, to twilight, all in one training day. No single fixed-tint lens handles that. A dark polarised lens that is perfect for the midday session is a liability at 5:30am. A clear or near-clear lens that works for dawn becomes useless when the sun is overhead.
The eye health bit people skip over
UV exposure is not just a midday problem. It is actually highest at lower sun angles, when the sun is closest to your eyeline. Early morning and late afternoon are the windows where UV reaches your retina most directly, because there is no brow ridge or eyelid working to block sunlight coming in from above. UV400 protection matters at any light level, even when the lens is near-clear.
Then there is glare. Wet pavement after a morning shower turns into a mirror under low sun. Tarmac at 5pm catches direct sun and bounces it straight back at you. Squinting through a session might feel minor in the moment, but if you are running 60 to 80 kilometres a week split across doubles, that is hours of unnecessary eye strain that could be avoided with the right lens.
And the worst part is, most runners only think about it on bright days. The damage from variable, low-angle, partly-shaded morning and evening light is the kind that adds up quietly.
One lens for both runs

If you want the whole system

The trade-off is price. Infinity is the top of the range. For most recreational runners doing doubles, Adaptor is the practical pick. For serious runners chasing marathon goals who want one pair for every condition, Infinity earns its place.
The honest takeaway
Doubles are not for everyone. If you are still building base mileage, or returning from injury, or training for shorter races, you do not need to add a second run to your day. The literature on this is consistent. Singles work brilliantly for most runners.
But if you are deep in marathon training, chasing a half marathon PB, or just genuinely loving the volume, doubles are an honest way to add miles without pushing your long runs into territory your body cannot recover from. And if you are doing them, you are running in two very different lights every single day.
