Hyrox Is Booming in Australia. What It Means for Your Training Runs.

Hyrox is not slowing down in Australia. The Sydney event lands in July 2026, Brisbane just wrapped its APAC Championship, and the entry lists keep growing. If you are training for it, or thinking about entering, you already know the format: eight one-kilometre runs, eight workout stations, all indoors. The race itself is under a roof. But your preparation is not.

What Hyrox training actually looks like

Most people approaching a Hyrox are not elite athletes with a dedicated coach and a perfectly structured program. They are regular fitness people who run a few times a week, do gym sessions, and are trying to fit more quality outdoor running into the mix. That shift matters.

Hyrox training builds an aerobic base first. That means outdoor kilometres, often at a comfortable Zone 2 pace, before layering in threshold work and gym stations. For most people, that base building happens before or after work, sometimes both. The hybrid nature of Hyrox training means your week looks less like a single sport and more like a constant rotation of sessions across different environments and times of day.

Some people fit in two sessions in a day when volume picks up close to the event. One before work in lower light, one later in full sun. That is where your sunglasses decision actually matters.

The race is indoors. Your training is not.

This is the thing that catches people off guard. Hyrox itself takes place inside a convention centre or exhibition hall. There are no UV rays on race day. But the months of training that get you there? That is all outside.

If you are training for Sydney in July, you are running through the back half of the Australian autumn and into winter. The sun sits lower in the sky, angles straight into your face on morning and evening runs, and the UV exposure is still significant year-round. The light constantly changes depending on what time of day you get outside.

That variability is exactly what creates problems for standard sunglasses. A lens that is comfortable for a 6am run feels like a blindfold when you are out at noon. One that works in full sun has you squinting or struggling on a cloudy afternoon. Hyrox training builds fitness through volume and consistency. You do not get to pick and choose perfect lighting conditions for every session.

A photochromic lens responds to UV light and adjusts its tint automatically. In bright conditions it darkens. When the light drops it clears back down, sometimes to near-clear. You get one pair of sunglasses that works across a morning run in low light, a lunchtime threshold session in full sun, and an after-work recovery effort as the sky fades.
