Smith's product page for the Motive opens with: "When you're moving fast on two wheels, a sharp, unobstructed view is critical. Ripping down singletrack or sprinting to win a stage."
Two wheels. Singletrack. Stages. The Motive is a cycling frame. Runners wear it because ChromaPop lenses are genuinely sharp, and Smith has decades of credibility in outdoor optics. But the frame was not designed around the forces a running stride generates.
Re. was. Every frame in the lineup was designed by runners for runners, built around the vertical oscillation, sweat and changing light conditions that define the sport. That distinction shapes every comparison below.

Weight: 20g vs 29g over thousands of strides
Nine grams sounds trivial. Hold both frames and you would struggle to tell the difference. But running is repetitive impact, and weight compounds.
The Re.balance sits at 20g, making it the lightest frame in the Re. range. The Re.flex comes in at 21.5g. Even the heaviest Re. frame, the Re.glide at 27g, undercuts the Motive's 29g, and the Re.glide carries that weight in an aerodynamic build designed for racing.
The Motive's 29g is light for a cycling frame. On a bike, where your head stays relatively still and vibration comes through the handlebars, 29g barely registers. On a run, where each footstrike sends force upward through your skeleton, lighter frames bounce less and press less on the nose bridge over distance.
Lens systems: swapping versus adapting
This is where the two brands diverge most sharply.
Smith built ChromaPop around colour accuracy. The technology filters colour wavelength crossovers to enhance contrast without altering the natural colours of your surroundings. The result is genuinely impressive clarity, and it is the reason Smith commands a premium. ChromaPop lenses on the Motive resisted scratches and smudges despite rough handling over 80+ hours of testing across running, biking and hiking.
The catch: all standard ChromaPop lenses on the Motive range from 10 to 15% VLT, designed for medium-bright to sunny days only. If conditions change mid-run, you swap lenses or squint. Smith does offer a ChromaPop variable-light option at $275 USD, but the base model lacks that adaptability.
Re. built its lens system around the reality that Australian running conditions shift constantly. The Adaptor lens transitions from 70% VLT down to 15%, covering overcast mornings through to full sun. The Adaptor Clear stretches that range further, going to 83% VLT in low light, meaning you can start a pre-dawn run without removing your glasses. The Infinity lens adds full photochromic function alongside polarisation, sitting in a 69 to 20% VLT range and cutting glare from wet roads and reflective surfaces.
No lens swaps. No carrying a second set. One frame handles the full range.
Fit and stability on the run
The Smith Motive uses a TR90 nylon frame with AutoLock hinges, a 5-base lens curvature with slight wraparound, and adjustable Megol nose and temple pads. The fit is medium, suited to average-sized faces. In trail running tests, the Motive bounced slightly during steep downhills but never slid down the nose or shifted out of position. That slight bounce is the tell: a frame engineered for cycling's smooth forces meeting running's vertical ones.
Re. frames use the same TR90 nylon and polycarbonate lenses, materials that are extremely hard to break, but the engineering focus is entirely different. Every frame in the range is built around a no-bounce fit as a baseline. The Re.balance has a streamlined profile with soft fixed nose pads that sit flush and stay out of the way. Re.flex, Re.glide and Re.silience all have adjustable nose pads, so you can dial in exactly how the frame sits on your face. All of it is designed around the repetitive vertical movement of running, not adapted from a cycling geometry.

Anti-fog: Re. has the clear advantage here
Fogging ruins more runs than bad weather. This is where Re. has a clear advantage.
The Smith Motive relies on a passive air gap. The frame sits slightly away from the face to encourage airflow, and in steady conditions it works. But you cannot adjust how far it sits, so what you get out of the box is what you get.
Re. takes a layered approach. Every frame has structural ventilation holes around the lens that actively move air across the surface. Re.flex, Re.glide and Re.silience also have adjustable nose pads, which means you can control exactly how far the frame sits from your face and tune airflow for your effort level and conditions. Then with the Infinity lens, you get permanent anti-fog technology built directly into the lens itself. That is ventilation plus adjustable fit plus lens-level coating, versus a fixed air gap. Prescription runners: one brand includes the insert
Three of the four Re. frames (Re.flex, Re.glide and Re.silience) include a free prescription insert. Take the insert to your optometrist, get your lenses fitted, clip it in. No separate purchase.
The Smith Motive makes no mention of a prescription insert option on its product page. Prescription runners would need to source a third-party solution or look at different Smith models.

Price: the AUD reality
Re. starts at $160 AUD. Even the Infinity lens, which gives you photochromic, polarised and permanent anti-fog in one, comes in at $220 AUD. All Re. orders include free global shipping and 30-day returns.
The Smith Motive starts at $215 USD. The variable-light ChromaPop version runs $275 USD. Converted to AUD, you are looking at roughly $325 or more before shipping. Independent reviewers have described the Motive as carrying a "hefty price tag", noting that ChromaPop lens quality is the reason for the premium.
ChromaPop is excellent technology. Whether that premium is justified depends on whether you value colour accuracy in a cycling-first frame over a lighter, adaptive system designed for the sport you are actually using it for.
Which frame for which runner
Daily training, general use: Re.balance. At 20g with the Adaptor lens covering 70 to 15% VLT, it handles most conditions without thinking. Most colour options in the Re. range if aesthetics matter to you.
Gym crossover and adjustable fit: Re.flex. At 21.5g with adjustable nose pads and a free prescription insert, it suits runners who move between outdoor runs and other training.
Race day, bright conditions: Re.glide with its Protector lens at VLT 13%, or the Smith Motive if ChromaPop colour fidelity is your priority in consistent sun. The Re.glide matches the Motive's VLT range at 2g less.
Trail and endurance: Re.silience. The widest lens profile in the Re. range, 24g, with the darkest Protector lens at VLT 11%. Built for debris, wind and harsh sunlight on unpredictable terrain.
Prescription wearers: Re.flex, Re.glide or Re.silience. All three include the insert at no extra cost.
Runners who also cycle extensively: The Smith Motive. If most of your time is on the bike and you occasionally run, the Motive's cycling-first geometry and ChromaPop clarity serve that split well. Just know it may bounce slightly on steep descents.
Smith makes a sharp lens. Re. makes a running frame. For runners buying running sunglasses, the frame matters more than the lens brand on it.
